Here is what romance scam survivor Karen Wheat has to say.
I was fooled and I am not alone in this. So many vulnerable women are being scammed by these people, because they have been cast aside before, or treated badly, or told they are fucked up in the head. And suddenly here comes this person who tells them they are worthy; who listens to them play guitar and sing, and says they have an angel voice; who devotedly writes those sweet love letters and poems everyday that she has been wanting her whole life. He tells her she is beautiful just the way she is, that he like curvy women, that the wrinkles and stretch marks only endear him more because he loves that she is a mother.. he tells her stories about the new life they will make together, and that they will create a new beautiful baby, to replace the one she lost. He quotes scripture smoothly and constantly refers to the fact that God is part of this love. He has the same heart for people that she does, he tells her how proud he is that she is starting her life over in such an important way, saving lives every single day, in fact he calls her his SUPERWOMAN He tells her how he can’t wait to meet her family, that he has lost his, and wants to be a part more than anything in the world. He tells her that he is writing a letter to her dad and brothers, confessing his love, seeking their permission and blessing. He lavishes her with praise about what a wonderful mother she is, and how he can’t believe how blessed his little children will be to gain the perfect mom. He tells her to start planning for a home that he will build for her, because, at long last she has finally found a man that DOES enjoy getting his hands dirty, and loves to work hard alongside the other men in the family. He assured her that when she makes a mistake, that is really isn’t a big deal, and that chores and projects for the family are actually one of the more enjoyable parts of life to him, something she has longed to hear for so many years. He soothes away her worries that he will not love her when he learns of all of the illnesses, the fatigue, the depression that she has, he wraps her up with words of comfort and promises that when they are together, it will all be just as it should. And that even though she has been led to believe otherwise, marriage vows to include “in sickness and in health” are not just pretty words, that he wants to marry all of me, with all of the Lyme, and depression, PTSD, and herpes.
